[Zerothis]***10-Yard Fight ist the first American Football game for the NES / Famicom and an arcade port. The game indeed plays like a simple arcade game. There is not much strategy involved. Controls could be better and the running speed is too slow (harder difficulty levels only consist of your team running even slower). All in all a poor representative of its sport.

[52]***Mach Rider is an early Famicom/NES motorcycle racing game set in the future. The controls and not optimal and the obstacles on the street are unfair. There is no real sense of driving in this game, the graphics and sound are unspectacular. One of Nintendo's weakest releases for their Famicom/NES system.***It's the year 2112. Earth has been invaded by the forces of evil. Battle the invaders as you race from sector to sector on your motorcycle, searching for survivors. Feel the incredible sense of speed as you zip past evil Quadrunners and zigzag between treacherous rocks, oil spills and other obstacles on the course. For a different challenge, create your own course in Design Mode, using the various twists, turns and straightaways the game has to offer. Remember, you are Earth's only hope—you are Mach Rider.

Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken  Enix (Chunsoft)1985The first real adventure game for the NES (or any other console system) is a port from a popular game on Japanese homecomputer systems. Instead of typing in commands they changed the system to feature a command list in the rigt side of the screen which you could choose from. This control method set a standard among Japanese-style console adventure games. The game itself is only mildly interesting though. It doesn't have a save feature, neither via battery backup nor passwords. But that isn't really necessary, because the game is very short. The graphics of the few locations are not very detailed and in parts look like drawn by a six-year old kid. The game sold very well on the NES and paved the way for many successors with similar gameplay, but today the content feels rather shallow. The game didn't age very well. labelimageminimize
The Goonies  Konami1986***
[17]***This was the second 8-bit Nintendo game based on a movie. And this on was actually created to be based on a movie (not a re-branded version of another game). Quite odd, its based on a North American movie and yet never released outside of Japan for the NES.***The Goonies is a maze-like platform game based on the movie of same name. Your task is to find and rescue all your friends, who are behind closed doors which have to be opened with bombs that can be found from killed enemies. You also have to find key parts, which are also behind said doors. The game's difficulty level is low. Once you know your way through the rather small mazes the game offers not much challenge. Nevertheless it is maybe the second-best platform game for the NES at the time of its release (only beaten by Super Mario Bros.), due to its good playability and controls. Music is also well done when compared to the usual high-pitched noisy music of other early NES/Famicom games.***Released only in Japan, Americans had to settle for the playchoice-10 or Vs. System arcade versions

Sqoon  Irem (Home Data)1986Sqoon is a horizontally scrolling shoot'em up game. The player controls a submarine where he not only has to shoot everything in sight but also has to rescue as many humans as possible from underwater farms (where they are held like cattle by hungry alien invaders *cough*). Only by delivering people or gold bars to the surface you can fill up necessary fuel. Without fuel or touching an enemy you die. The graphics are not very detailed, background graphics consist mainly of simple blue water. Controls are average. Worst part is the miserable hit detection and the boringness that comes as soon as you have seen two levels. There is virtually no variety in later levels. After the eighth stage the game starts at stage one with some more palette swapped backgrounds.***The proper name is "Sqoon", however, proper spelling would be Squoon. which is not the actual title of this game. labelimageminimize
Sherlock Holmes: Hakushaku Reijou Yuukai Jiken  Towa Chiki (Another)1986***I don't know what the goal is in this game. You run around in different British cities and try to find clues about something I don't know about. And actually I couldn't care less, because the game is bad, one of the worst games for the Famicom I have played so far. So, there you have your top-view running around in the city scenes, where you kick and stab innocent looking citizens to gain money. Additionally there are locations where the game switches to side-view platform scenes, which have terrible controls. And everytime! you beat one of the numerous evil looking humans the game stops and gives you a text message which might be some kind of hints. And everything in this game, all items and clues are very well hidden. Yes, I admit that many old games had things very well hidden on the brink of unfairness, but at least they had acceptable controls. The music is an extremely annoying high-pitched something. So eventually (if you happen to play this game for longer than 5 minutes) you might buy a trip to the next city for more unplayable action goodness. I can't see anything positive about this game. labelimageminimize
Deadly Towers  Brøderbund;Irem (Lenar)1986You are young Prince Myer, setting out to defend the ancient kingdom of Willner. Rubas, King of Devils, has built a castle in the north and is preparing to invade your kingdom. Ringing magic bells, he is calling out an army of the most terrifying creatures known (or unknown) to man. To defeat Rubas, you must journey to his palace and burn down his seven bell towers. On your quest, you will collect weapons and armor to defend yourself against rats and crawlers; bats, snakes and slime; demons, dragons and more. You'll need every ounce of help you can get. For you are all that stands between your people and the forces of darkness.***Deadly Towers is a mixed-bag. The gameplay is similar to [game=#9176]The Legend of Zelda[/game], with the perspective being a bit more 3D-ish. For a game released in 1986 it looks rather advanced. The graphics are nice, the music is good and the game is huge. The game has major flaws however. Some of them are not uncommon for an early NES game. Many necessary items are very well hidden in non-obvious spots. The difficulty level is too high. In this game the beginning is even the hardest part of the game. Being badly equipped you have barely a chance againts the many monsters. Sometimes when you run over a certain spot you are teleported into a dungeon. And you cannot immediately leave the dungeon, until you find the exit. Making things worse, the dungeons are huge 16x16 screen mazes with many difficult monsters. And only in these dungeons you can find shops where you can buy some better equipment to survive the final seven towers where seven bells are hidden, which you must find and destroy in order to challenge the end boss. Now with a walkthrough and cheat at hand I could avoid the biggest frustration, but I understand people who say that this game is a game design disaster.***"Mashou" is used in official documentation.

Journey through this 3D looking game to collect the evil magic bells from the 7 bell towers and burn them in the sacred flame.

Mashō literally means "Evil Bell" an is a pun of 魔性 which means meaning "devilishness." It was supposed to be titled "Hell's Bells," in English but this title qualified for Nintendo's unwritten censorship rules. Oddly, there are Holy Crosses shown all through the game and the game is pretty blatant that God himself has personally asked the game's protagonists to complete this quest.

This game has a very long crawl screen of text. Possibly the longest crawl of any game previous and I can't think of a longer since. The text mentions that the castle explored in the game is actually under construction. This can thinly justify the level structure.

[Zerothis]***I'm surprised to find this game listed on many 'worst games of all time' lists. Ya, its insanely hard. And true, the character and enemies moves in plain 2D even though the enemies are (not) placed in a weird pseudo 3D non-existent environment. And, I'll admit, generally hidden/invisible entrances are used for required main levels instead of just secret bonus areas. And, ok, 20 hit points for the first enemy encountered in the game that isn't even a boss and doesn't even have a name, and doesn't even have a face, or a brain, or limbs, or multiple colors, is a bit excessive. Oh and instead of finding a way to the remotest part of the dungeons, grabbing the treasure and being teleported out, the player is teleported into the remotest part of the insanely complex dungeons, loses treasures, and must find their own way out. It could be worse, imagine if it had no continue option (which is easily exploited btw.
Start the game, die, then change the first two letters of your continue password to "EF" or "FE".
Wimpy). However, I like it for the challenge, I find the false 3Dishness very retro (by 1986 standards), in a good way. This game proceeded [gameid=9176]The Legend of Zelda[/gameid] and in many ways its better, imo. The size of dungeons and the order of their 'completion' are superior. Deadly towers was actually the 2nd NES game I ever played after Super Mario Bros. It took me about 300 hours to beat. This game gets 4.5 stars by me.

Track & Field  Konami;Kemco (Konami)1987The Armchair Olympics Are On The Air! This ain't no 20-minute workout. It's the ultimate in head-to-head athletic competition, in 8 grueling events. 100-Meter Dash. Long Jump. Hurdles. Javelin. Skeet Shooting. Triple Jump. Archery. And the High Jump. [Zerothis]***Track & Field combines the events of the two separate Japanese cartridges [game=#173086]Hyper Olympic[/game] and [game=#168936]Hyper Sports[/game] into a new game, which was a very good idea, because with a total of eight events you get more fun for your money. All events are very well playable and motivating. The game had a very late release date in Europe (1992) and apparently they renamed the title to profit from the fact that this was the year of the Olympic Summer Games in Barcelona (Spain).

NES-RC-GBR Rad Racer UPC:0-74299-00988-4, Mattel catalog number:sku:0988, published in Great Britain***This is no ordinary game pak. This is Rad Racer. Nintendo's thrilling 3-D video game. Rad Racer comes action-packed with revolutionary 3-D technology and 3-D glasses (they're free inside) that will have you really believing you're in the middle of a cross country rally race-cruising along at 200 miles per hour!Rad Racer takes you through 8 treacherous race courses including the Los Angeles Nightway, the San Francisco Highway and the Grand Canyon. Choose the Ferrari and you'll enter a Super Machine competition where you'll race against Corvettes and Lamborghinis. Select the F-1 Machine and you'll compete against incredibly fast cars. Whether it's Ferrari or F-1, 3-D or Regular mode, Rad Racer's hair-pin curves, dare-devil turns and realistic action will bring home all the fun and excitement of real rally racing. Think you're up to it? Then drivers start your engines. It's Rad Racer!***"Rad Racer" is as much an OutRun clone for the NES as it can get. You race on eight tracks against a time limit with checkpoints. Each of the tracks has different backgroung graphics, there are three tunes to choose from (which can even be changed while driving) and you can choose your car from either a ferrari sports car or a formula 1 style racing car. The game is fast and all elements are decently implemented, but it also feels monotonous at times. Each stage features only one set of car graphics and the incoming "car waves" reminded me often enough of the old game [game=#5165]Enduro[/game].

Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun  Technos;Taito (Technos)1987REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE

In the knife-edge world of the vigilante there is no place to rest, no time to think — but look sharp — there is always time to die! From the city subways to the gangland ghettos you will always encounter the disciples of evil who's mission it is to exterminate the only man on earth who dares to throw down the gauntlet in their path — the Renegade. PLAY RENEGADE... PLAY MEAN!***Renegade has some significance for the Beat'em Up genre which would implement lots of Renegade's gameplay elements. But I don't think the NES version plays very good. I felt that kick-jumping is the most effective method for the whole game. Parts of it are frustrating. The last level annoyed me quite a bit with trying to find the right way through many screens. The Japanese and US versions have in parts different background and sprite graphics. The overall quality of the graphics is ok, and there is even some variety in gameplay with a scene where you must ride a motorbike. And as mentioned at the beginning, it is a rather innovative game.

Getsufuu Maden  Konami1987"Getsufuu Maden" plays like a mix of [game=#7949]Zelda II The Adventure of Link[/game] and [game=#7647]Castlevania[/game]. And as a bonus to the overworld map and side-scrolling action there are even three huge dungeons which you must explore in third-person perspective. The game is of high quality with lots of (short) levels, shops and interesting boss battles. Some repetitive parts can not be avoided however. There is lots of backtracking through already played levels. Graphics and music are good Konami standard, which means a step better than most other companies at that time. BTW: The box art is a special lenticular print (changing its image depending on which angle you look at it), so my box scan looks rather strange.*** labelimageminimize
Street Cop  Bandai1987The sixth game in Bandai's series for the PowerPad "controller" and the last one that was also published in the US. You are a cop which has to catch a certain amount of criminals in each level. Now the problem is that I lack a PowerPad and playing it on an emulator is not the best option so its hard to really rate the game. It is nicely done with proper graphics and music but nothing really memorable. labelimageminimize
Kaiketsu Yanchamaru  Irem;Data East (Tose)1987***Compared to other NES/Famicom titles from 1987, Kid Niki is a refreshingly simple and straight-forward platform game. No strange gameplay mechanics or complicated maze-like layouts. Quick reflexes is all that is needed. Of course the game has some secret areas, but they are not mandatory. The game controls are nice and the levels look different enough. The game only lacks a bit of variety in enemy types and the same music plays in nearly each level (with the exception of one cave level which has different music I think). labelimageminimize
Jaws  LJN (Atlus;Westone)1987A rather weak game based on the "Jaws" horror movies and one of the first games from US publisher Ljn. You must and kill sea creatures in order to collect shells, buy upgrades with them to level up and boost your attack power and once you are strong enough attack and kill Jaws. The game is really short and quite easy, because Jaws can not kill you when you are swimming at the surface. The endgame where you have to ram Jaws with your boat is interesting, but too short as is the whole game. On the other hand collecting shells is really monotonous, so one might be thankful about that. labelimageminimize
Stick Hunter: Exciting Ice Hockey Game  K Amusement Leasing (Micronics)1987"Stick Hunter" was the first ice hockey game for the Famicom/NES, predating Nintendo's popular Ice Hockey by a month. Of course Stick Hunter must be compared with Nintendo's Ice Hockey and it loses in all aspects. Graphics and sound are only average at best, but that isn't the gamebreaking aspect. "Stick Hunter is just on the border of being unplayable. Overall bad controls ruin the gameplay badly. labelimageminimize
Taito Grand Prix: Eikou e no License  Taito (Now Production)1987"Taito Grand Prix" is a pretty unusual and ambitious racing game for the Famicom. It is one of the earliest games featuring tuning and upgrading your car. And that is not all. Between the races you can move around on a kind of overworld and visit different cities. In the cities are shops where you can buy car parts and take part in a few races. You start the game with a mini-van, after finishing low rank races you can upgrade to a ferrari. Successfully beating all courses will give you access to a complete formula 1 season. Content-wise the game offers quite a lot for its time. Gameplay is the usual Out Run, Pole Position mix. The games has lots of courses, but sadly they are also repetitive of course. Even the Formula 1 courses take place in the usual low rank areas (desert scenario in Italy?). That damped my initial enthusiasm quite a bit. Controls are ok. So in the end "Taito Grand Prix" was partly ahead of its time and partly just another standard driving game when it comes to the driving action itself.***The game notably allows players to exceed 255 kilometers per hour. 8-bit games must allocate two bytes of memory to exceed the number 255. Most action oriented games of at the time don't bother for any numbers to exceed 255 except for a score; they opted to allocate only 1 byte for any number that goes higher than the number 1.

This cartridge contains Save RAM and appears to have a battery door so that is can be replaced. However, the door is fake.

Trained in hand-to-hand combat and skilled in every weapon known to man, you're Fox Hound's lethal fighting machine, code named "Solid Snake". But on this mission you better be sly as well, to surprise heavily-armed enemies, busting 'em up quietly and rescuing their hostages before alarms are triggered. Plus you gotta maintain radio contact with Commander South, who'll feed you crucial info on Metal Gear's whereabouts. To survive, capture sub-machine guns, Barettas, grenade launchers, and plastic explosives, until you find and destroy Metal Gear, ending CaTaffy's reign of terror!***

[33]***
[1]***On the one hand "Metal Gear" is a classic, introducing stealth elements into the action-adventure genre and the first game in one of the most successful and acclaimed videogame series ever. Graphics are nice and controls are good. However there are numerous small and bigger gameplay issues. First of all its pretty difficult with lots of trial and error scenes (sudden pitfalls). The inventory and item management is not very good. Example: In order to open doors you must acquire key cards. There are up to eight cards. To open a door with it you have to activate the card. So when you stand before a new door you must constantly switch between all cards until you have found the right one. Also the constant respawn of enemies once you return into another screen is something I disliked. The game has some sort of story (mostly told by radio calls), but I expected a bit more in this regard.***

Nobunaga no Yabō: Zenkokuban  Koei1988NOBUNAGA'S AMBITION is a turn-based strategy game set in Japan's "Warring States" period that is the 16th century when Japan was divided into numerous feudal states, each one ruled by a daimyo - a warlord. One of those daimyos was the ambitious Nobunaga Oda, a merciless ruler and a great strategist. Your task is to conquer all "fiefs" in Japan, either in a shorter 17 fiefs game or a longer 50 fiefs game. The game surely set a new standard for NES strategy games regarding complexity. It not only features a strategic level of governing your fief, but also tactical warfare when attacking or defending a fief on a hex-map. My biggest issue with this game is the difficulty level, which is rather high and the fact that the game is rather slow paced. Especially the 50 fief game takes ages to play.***1 player, 2 players, 3 players, 4 players, 5 players, 6 players, 7 players, or 8 players competitive turn based play. The one-player mode consists of a simple 7-match tournament. You can choose between eight different female and male players and three different courts (Hard, Clay and Grass). The game features lots of little speech samples, which is rare on the NES and they sound surprisingly good. Meitantei Holmes: Kiri no London Satsujin Jiken  Towa Chiki (Another)1988"Meitantei Holmes: Kiri no London Satsujin Jiken" is the second game based on famous detective Sherlock Holmes for the NES from Towachiki. Not very imaginative, but at least this time the game works well enough. On a map of London you walk to different places, question people, solve some puzzles etc. Being in Japanese its hard to follow the story and thus didn't develop its strength for me. Graphically the game only features monotone background scene graphics. Technically it looks a bit cheap, but in this special case it fits the atmosphere positively. 8 Eyes  Seta;Taxan (Thinking Rabbit)1988After hundreds of years of chaos, mankind has finally emerged from the ruins of nuclear war. This world of the distant future has once again flourished under the guidance of the Great King, who harnessed the power of the 8 Eyes to rebuild the planet. These strange jewels of power were formed at the eyes, or center, of the eight nuclear explosions which nearly destroyed the Earth. In the wrong hands, the 8 Eyes could cause untold destruction... They have banished the King to the nuclear wastelands, and already their squabbling threatens to plunge the world into war once again! Although David Weibenson was a developer for GameTek, this seems to have been an independent project that he never found a publisher for.

[27]***River City Ransom takes place in River City, where our heroes, Alex and Ryan, find a letter on Ryan's locker from a guy named Slick. The letter says that Ryan's girlfriend, Cyndi, has been kidnapped, and Slick has taken River City hostage with the help of countless gangs and evil bosses. It's up to our heroes to save poor Cyndi and free River City from the clutches of Slick and his underlings. You can play as Alex and take on the challenge alone or battle with two players simultaneously as Alex and Ryan. Kick and punch to fight your way through gang members, evil bosses and other goons, or use a variety of weapons including a chain whip, brass knuckles and a tire, to name a few. Raise your stats by eating right, and gain new techniques by reading books. With your fighting prowess and never-ending spirit, the bad guys won't know what hit them.***They take your girlfriend. You gotta get her back. A buddy helps you out. You walk around beating people senseless and taking their cash to get food and more techniques you learn via books.
The moral: Steeping on hostile truf usually attracts conflict and you can learn how to flail and turn into a ball if you read a book. Fun game even though it's not believable that your school would be that far away from you and they'd still kidnap your girlfriend instead of someone more important or closer, but yeah... fun game.

Also notable for being difficult. In particular, a long gap near then end of the game requires a jump of the maximum possible distance (pixel precise) that many players conclude is impossible until seeking outside help.

Defender of the Crown Ultra Games;Palcom Software (Beam Software)1989The in-game story seems to refer to the end of the second crusade and one of the few battles that the crusading forces actually won. Undoubtedly this is backstory and the game is set some time later than 1149 and sooner than 1199 (which is the historical beginning of John of England's reign). Probably the murdered king mentioned is Henry II of England, who actually died of natural causes in 1189; but his health was certainly not improved by the actions of his sons, especial Prince John. Never the less, the in-game date begins counting from October 1149. The game takes much dramatic license. The player is one of the six knights mentioned in the story and all of these knights will be battling for England.

[27]***Determining the Year
A bit of the script didn't quite make it to the big screen but was included in the novelisation. A news report says Sylvester Stallone died at the age of 97 from complications of a failed head transplant. This dates the story to 2043 or 2044. BTW, the RoboCop remake will be set in 2046.

RoboCop is an odd type of Cyber Punk. First off, it is pro-authority. Law enforcement are not just the good guys, their ideals and goals are shared by the protagonist and the audience is expected to root for this authority. Robocop dispenses justice against anti-authority punk criminals and usurping authorities. The megacorporation in the story really isn't, yet. Their doing all they can to become an all-powerful above-the-law entity, but their not there yet. In fact, the story, and one of the main enemies of it are a product of of this struggle. Their first step is too buy the Detroit police department. Not bribery, they literally buy it. The organisation, buildings, equipment, and yes, even the people become property of OCP. They hope to create a force of robot to assert authority Detroit. The goal of both protagonist and the megacorpaeration is to fight crime, but only on the surface. Each is actually motivated to enforce authority. OCP's Cyber Punk motives are hampered by a punk. Note the protagonist, RoboCop, is not the punk. The punk in the RoboCop story is actually a middle-executive of the would-be megacorporation, Bob Morton. He's not a software hacker, he's a hardware hacker. He augments Alex Murphy's body to create RoboCop. RoboCop then does all the software hacking in the story, including hacking his own digital and biological software. It eventually takes a bit of social engineering to allow his biological moral code to direct actions that were not allowed by his digital moral code. The decisive battle was not in the streets, it took place in the mind of a cyborg. Digital life vs biological life. Digital life was not defeated, it merely took its rightful place and allowed biological life to take action. Robocop is really its more of a transhumanism story. A struggle to skip dystopian Cyber Punk by transitioning directly into Post Cyber Punk transhumanism where flesh and circuitry coexist for the betterment of mankind. Where the joined machine-man saves us from a dystopian future by preventing the rise of the megacorporation. Robocop a transhumanist messiah. Killed for supporting justice. Raised from the dead. First of the new man exerting proper authority to deliver the world from crime and undesired authority.

1 player only.

This is a vertical scrolling shooter but it has a story. and a less than completely linear structure. Hood claims to have a way to bombard the Earth with meteorites. He will do so if the Thunderbirds do not give him their vehicles in 60 days. The Thunderbirds determine that he must have a very powerful energy source to backup his threat but it won't be finished for 60 days. Which is the reason for his demands and deadline first, rather than him announcing his threat with a meteorite. They set out to find his source of energy before the deadline it up.
The player choose from several missions per round which is also a choice of which Thunderbird and corresponding vehicle to pilot. Completing a mission or combination of missions will unlock additional ones. There are no in-game clues to the unlocking pattern and it has to be learned by experience. their are (apparently) 12 possible missions. The missions themselves are pretty standard vertical scrolling shooting with powerups dropped from exploding enemies that are lost when the vehicle is damaged. Enemies with powerups glow red. The ship has 3 hit points that can be recovered (1 HP per powerup). You can gain better weapons and also wingmen to help blast an odd assortment of enemies. Should a ship lose all its hit points, it must be grounded for 3 days for repairs. That's 3 days closer to the deadline. Successfully completing a stage costs 1 day. Other than this deadline, all 5 pilots (and vehicles) effectively have infinite lives.
